Social Security

The coordination of social security systems and rules are set by the European Economic Community (EEC) Regulation No.1408/71 on the application of social security schemes.

Special rules for Latvian seafarers who are employed on the vessels registered in the Norwegian International Ship’s Register

On November 18th of  2004 Temporary Agreement has been concluded between the Latvian Ministry of Welfare and the Norwegian Royal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs about the Latvian seafarers employed on Norwegian vessels. According to this Agreement these seafarers are subject to Latvian social insurance legislation. Thus Latvian Seafarers on Norwegian flagged ships are subject for the reception of E-101 form with special conditions.

CALCULATION OF SOCIAL CONTRIBUTION UNDER NIS FLAG


Calculation and payment of contribution:

Employees in standard situations are covered by all branches of social security: pensions (old age), disability, unemployment occupational accidents, maternity, sickness.

Contributions rate in this situation is 34.09 %, where the employer is paying 23.59 % and the employee – 10.50 %. Contributions must be made from employment income amounting to 2.5 minimum wages for Officers and 1.5 minimum wages for Ratings in Latvia. From the January 1st  of 2014 the minimum wage is 320 Euro per month.

The employer makes the following calculation:

Social payment for Officers:

Euro 800 * 23.59% = 188.72 Euro – from Employer
Euro 800 * 10.50% = 84 Euro – from Employee

Social payment for Ratings:

Euro 480 * 23.59% = 113.23 Euro – from Employer
Euro 480 * 10.50% = 50.40 Euro - from Employee

Total sum of contributions payable is calculated by adding together the employer’s and employee’s part

TOTAL FOR OFFICER: 272.72 Euro
TOTAL FOR RATING: 163.63 Euro
